In 2004 the Seattle Times wrote an article about the problems Brier was having attracting and retaining good officers. A lack of pay, training, equipment and contract were all cited. After 8 years of the current administration most of these issues still exist today:
OFFICER PAY: It still lags behind other cities. We may not be able to afford same amount as every city, but we certainly can't afford to pay to send recruits to the academy only to lose them to other law enforcement agencies.
TRAINING: Our active duty officers receive the minimal training required by the state (PSR - Police Skills Refresher), and nothing more. This is enough to keep them accredited, not enough to keep them and our citizens safe. We have several reserve officers helping in Brier, these officers get no additional training. We need to look at cost effective ways to provide more training to our police officers, including partnering with neighboring cities to pool training resources.
EQUIPMENT: Thankfully we just got a new police vehicle, but we still have two that are near or over 100,000 miles of use and need replacing.
CONTRACT: After 3 and half years of working without a contract, one was finally signed after mediation failed and arbitration was threatened. How can we hope to recruit and retain good officers when they can't count on stable working conditions?
FUNDING: We need to be more aggressive about going after grants and other available resources.
RETENTION: We need to work harder to retain our officers counting on more than a bad economy to keep them here.
Also we should roll back the 63% raise given specifically to Mayor Colinas in 2010. We all need to tighten our belts, and it's not appropriate to give special deals to specific individuals in our City government (BMC 2.04.040).
I have never been, nor ever will be in favor of increasing or housing or population density either through allowing developers to squeeze more homes on smaller lots or by allowing townhomes/apartments/condos/etc.
Our citizens and police officers deserve a better Brier!

I grew up in the Tacoma area, attended the UW and settled in South Snohomish County after marrying my wife Annette in 1995. We fell in love with the rural atmosphere of Brier so we started building our home on Old Poplar in 1999. We are happy to be a part of the Brier Bobcat family at Brier Elementary; our twins Alex and Aurora are in the Second Grade. Annette is a human resources executive with Microsoft and I have worked in a technical management role on AT&T's mobility network for the past 20 years. I am also part owner of Home Theater Forum, a small business established in 1998. I am a member of the Selective Service Board, and volunteer as both a Watch Dog and in the classroom at Brier Elementary. People who know me well would describe me as civic minded, not politically motivated. I look forward to the opportunity to earn your vote in November and working to create a better Brier.
We could use your help getting the word out. Talk to your friends and neighbors - let them know they have a choice this year: the status quo or a better Brier.
